Saint Great Martyr Catherine was highly educated, beautiful and wise daughter of the governor of Alexandria in Egypt and refused to marry until she met Him, who would exceed her in beauty, wisdom
Her mother, a secret Christian, took Catherine to an elder-spiritual father. He told her about Christ and gifted her an icon of Theotokos with the Child and advised her to pray. In a vision Virgin Mary begged Jesus to glance at Catherine, but He denied, for she hadn`t been baptised yet. After that, the girl received baptism, started to pray devoutly and saw a vision for a second time - Christ gifted her a ring as a sign of His heavenly engagement with her.
At that time, emperor Maxentius, who persecuted christians, arrived in Olexandria. Catherine bravely stood up to him, calling on to stop persecutions. Emperor convened 50 sages to dispute with her, but she convinced them about the veracity of christianity, for what they were all executed.
Maxentius attempted to seduce Catherine with pledges of riches and marriage, but she remained faithful to Christ. She was imprisoned, where she converted many people. After having been tortured on a spiked breaking wheel, that miraculously shattered, Maxentius decided to offer her marriage for the last time, but received a rejection. After that, Saint Catherine was put to death - beheaded with a sword.
